23rd Of Forever
© 2001 Jesse Slokum
My old man went the wrong way down a Manhattan mean street,
Looking for my remains left baking in dirty gutters,
Never gave me a chance to tell him it was indiscrete,
To look like a diplomat before a beggar who mutters.
He got mugged trying to find me as the victim of the same,
The mugger really was blind, that's what money madness can do
Nobody ever saw my face, but they all know my name...
The city's gotten that bad, you and I sure know it's true.
But I won't buy and sell the world,
Making it - making it sin for me...
Don't tempt me with making it,
Or raking it, raking in in for FREE!
Pity's rotten core has bought a big golden parachute,
As innocence is rounded up, now for the last lamb roast...
Some slugger will do the job like a hungry, naked brute.
And the Roman stadia are prepared from Coast to Coast
Still, I won't buy and sell the world,
Making it - making it sin for me...
Don't tempt me with making it,
Or raking it, raking in in for FREE!
The twenty second of november took the man from me
And will never give nothing in the passage of time
First, the young elected king, and the 2 wise men
And then, nineteen years later, the third bought his box of lime
The 23rd of forever is clever enough to conceal its name
Yet, the calendar ends when we dismantle its last page
So, don't you even endeavor to leverage the payback on the same
Each of us knows we won't need clothes when we're stripped of age.
So, I won't buy and sell the world,
Making it - making it sin for me...
Don't tempt me with making it,
Or raking it, raking in in for FREE!
I've told you a story that glows with the glory of knowing who you are
Don't worry, or hurry to curry favors from one who can't set you free
I'll hold no cards or try to pick up the shards of any exploding star
Just trust the truth in the evidence booth, and let yourself BE
It takes two to tango, so let's go to Durango, and trade wedding rings
I'd rather have honey than all of your money, it's your heart I desire
We know that we're turning as we grow in the learning that our wedding
brings
Why wait 'til the finish of the race, to diminish the pace we need to
dance under the wire?
No, I won't buy and sell the world,
Making it - making it sin for me...
Don't tempt me with making it,
Or raking it, raking in in for FREE!
