After I'm Done Singing
© 2001 Jesse Slokum

There's too many desperate rock'n'rollers,
Looking for somethin' easy on the side
Set 'em up and roll-a-strike bowlers
Cookin' up trouble for the midnight ride!
Don't they know those crazy days are over?
It's the last reel of the Wild, Wooly West,
Like the Frisco Kid or Smokey Stover.
Now, ev'ryone's hopin' they'll past the test...

Well, pardon me for talkin' out of turn,
But ain't love more than a book up on a shelf?
I still wonder if you will ever learn...
You been hidin' the real thing from yourself!

Life ain't no Hollywood B-run movie
Complete with big cigar and casting couch
We'd like it to be forever groovy
Nobody wants to be a nasty grouch
Yet, so many wild ones are still thinkin'
That they can make it out of death alive
Pill poppin', smokin', tokin' and drinkin'
Like a boxer lookin' to take a dive...

So, pardon me for talkin' out of turn,
But ain't love more than a book up on a shelf?
I still wonder if you will ever learn...
You been hidin' the real thing from yourself!

No, there's nothin' left now, to the future
Ev'rything that happens has come to pass.
Yes, nobody here gets to be exempt.
Better find a true heart that'll suit ya
With some sweet dreams of splendor in the grass
It's only LOVE that is above contempt!

Yes, we heard some are hopin' to be frozen
In the deep ice until we can fix it
Some dreamin' they could be God's own Chosen
If that's how the finger of fate picks it.
I don't know - Maybe that's what's meant to be.
But, sooner or later - win or lose it
We got to try to Pay The Rent you see...
So, I'll take Life anyway you choose it!

So, pardon me for talkin' out of turn,
But ain't love more than a book up on a shelf?
I still wonder if we will ever learn...
We've been hidin' the real thing from ourself!
Yes, we've been hidin' the real thing, the real thing,
We've been hidin' the real thing from ourself!
