After I'm Done Singing
© 2001 Jesse Slokum
I am the apple that rolled the furthest
From the family tree
Besides the scrapple, All I'm living for
Is here in front of me.
Fathers tell their daughters I am forbidden fruit
Gamblers call me the joker, I don't fit any other suit!
And there are times I feel like a tired old engine
Hauling a trainload of Yesterday's sorrow.
That's just when I remember my good times
Shine through the night like a head-light until tomorrow
Still, town after town turns 'round corners. leaving you alone
With nothing left, except your soul, to save...
As one by one the aging children of the road become names in stone
Mute letters screaming over an early grave.
I am the apple that rolled the furthest
From the family tree
Besides the scrapple, All I'm living for
Is here in front of me.
Fathers tell their daughters I am forbidden fruit
Gamblers call me the joker, I don't fit any other suit!
High noon finds me out in the market square
Take a few moments, if the time is ripe...
In these few notes of song, there's something to share.
As I try to be FREE from the vinyl factory and the hype.
Don't treat me like a snake in the grass
As if we still have a paradise to lose
Don't leave me standing here as you pass
You can sing with me and give me a hand if you choose
I am the apple that rolled the furthest
From the family tree
Besides the scrapple, All I'm living for
Is here in front of me.
